Hey there, and welcome once again to Life, Unfiltered!

Rolling right into another slightly different post than my usual content, I have written a poem for you lovely people!

A little background: So, I was a little stressed over what I was going to write about this week, as I’m intending on soon publishing Alexandra Reads but also still figuring out the formatting and details of that change to my blog. So I went to sleep one night and had a stupid dream that I wrote this AMAZING poem for The Adulting Journals about our family dog called… To Dog. Extremely creative, I know.

As soon as I woke up, I eagerly opened up a doc and jotted down my dream poem and when I looked at the final product of six short lines I was… well, bitterly disappointed. I told this whole story to my mom as a joke and when I recited the dream poem to her, she laughed a little, then to my surprise said, “Add to it. You can turn it into something.”

Now, the family dog is not much to look at. He’s a ratty mini Aussie doodle with these big saucer eyes that show he has not a single thought in his little brain. But he’s a good boy, and I’m glad he’s part of our home.

My final poem expanded on the six lines I made up in my dream which make up the first stanza. With the aim of accurately portraying the goofy animal that stumbled into our lives four years ago, I came up with the final form of To Dog. Hope you guys like it!

To Dog:

Dear Dog,

You are a dog

You protect the home

And hang out with us

You are a dog

Good dog.

You followed us home

Trotting on unsteady paws

A fluffy black shadow

Chasing after the car

Yipping and yapping

You are a dog.

Behind those eyes

Brown galaxies, Dad calls them

I just see television static

Your only thoughts being:

“Eat! Sleep! Play!”

You are a dog.

You nap on my bed

Sniff the bird every now and then

Huff and puff and sigh

Staring at my lunch

While I try to eat in peace

You are a dog.

You are a dog

You protect the home

And show us what love is

You are innocent and gold

Good dog.

Love,

Alexandra
